The History of Fernwood Hills
A Legacy of Hospitality, Stewardship, and Growth
Fernwood Hills isn’t just a venue—it’s a place built on hard work, deep roots, and a commitment to bringing people together while caring for the land. Located in Komoka, Ontario, this 36-acre property has been a gathering space for generations. The Mann family has spent decades nurturing both the forest and the people who visit, creating a sanctuary where guests can celebrate, reflect, and connect with nature and each other.
Planting the Seeds: 1966 - 1980s
In 1966, Vern and Frances Humphrey purchased the land with a vision: to create a welcoming space for community events, meals, and celebrations. Vern, a former army chef, believed in the power of food to bring people together. Frances, with her gift for hospitality, made sure every guest felt at home. Together, they transformed the land, carefully tending its natural beauty while shaping it into a place for gatherings. They cleared trails, planted trees and gardens, and established open spaces where people could come together.
From the very beginning, Fernwood Hills also operated as a campground, providing short-term and long-term stays for visitors looking to immerse themselves in nature. The ‘Picnic Grove’ became the heart of many gatherings, hosting church picnics, reunions, and community events. It wasn’t just about the events themselves, but about fostering connection, gratitude, and faith in something bigger. Guests left Fernwood Hills not only with memories but with a sense of peace and renewal.
Nurturing Growth: 1980s - 2000s
As the years passed, Fernwood Hills evolved. In the 1980s and 90s, the campground expanded to include more sites, accommodating an increasing number of families and individuals seeking refuge in the forest. Vern also planted beautiful gardens throughout the property, transforming it into a picturesque park-like setting that enhanced the natural beauty of the land. With this growth, the land became a home away from home for many, fostering deep connections with nature and each other.
In the early 2000s, the focus shifted toward retreats, hospitality, and celebrations for the surrounding community. Vern and Frances dedicated themselves to hosting meals for their local church and neighbours, often serving over 100 people at a time. Vern, renowned for his pies and elaborate visual spreads, poured his creativity into every meal, turning food into an experience of art and community. These gatherings were more than just dinners—they were moments of fellowship, care, and generosity, strengthening the bonds of those who came together.
Throughout these years, stewardship of the land remained central. Trees were planted, trails maintained, and wildlife carefully respected. Faith, hospitality, and community remained the guiding principles, allowing guests to find clarity, inspiration, and renewal in the peaceful surroundings.
A New Chapter: 2000s - Present
By the early 2000s, Fernwood Hills had become a recognized destination for retreats and special events. Vern and Frances continued to care for the land, though age now slowed them down. Their daughter, Celia and her husband Ron, stepped in, helping with events and maintenance of the property. After Vern passed in 2012, Celia and Ron formally took ownership in 2013, carrying forward the family legacy.
They expanded Fernwood’s hospitality beyond the local community, welcoming guests from all over Southern Ontario for personal and small group retreats and celebrations. Their heart for hospitality and passion for caring for people guided every decision. In 2017, they introduced tiny cabin stays, offering guests an immersive forest experience. Their stewardship was about more than business—it was about preserving a legacy and leaving a meaningful impact.
A Place for All Generations
Today, Fernwood Hills is more than just a venue. It’s a reflection of a family’s dedication to hospitality, a commitment to preserving the forest, and a belief in the power of gathering. It’s about community, faith, and the simple joy of nature’s presence.
Whether you’re here for a stay, a retreat, an event, or a quiet walk, you’re part of something bigger—a legacy of care, connection, and growth.
As the forest stands tall, so does Fernwood Hills’ purpose: to welcome, nurture, and create a place where people belong.
